DISCOVER FLORENCE UFFIZI GALLERY

The Uffizi Gallery in Florence is a building designed by Giorgio Vasari dating back to the 16th century and the time of the Medici family. At that time, the building was used as administrative offices. In 1581, it was converted into a museum by Grand Duke Francesco I de’ Medici. Just looking at its structure, you’ll be amazed. U-shaped, it consists of two long interconnected galleries surrounding a central street overlooking the Arno, not far from the Ponte Vecchio. With its large windows, the light that penetrates the gallery is magnificent. Another of the gallery’s distinctive architectural features is its famous Corridoio Vasarino. This corridor links the Palazzo Vecchio of the Uffizi Gallery to the Palazzo Pitti, on the other bank of the Arno, which was the principal residence of the Medici of the time. Inside, in the large halls, you’ll see fine collections of paintings, sculptures, tapestries and decorations. These are Italian and European works from the Renaissance to the 18th century. These include an entire collection of art by the Medici family, works by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, Gentile da Fabriano’s Adoration of the Magi, Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Raphael’s Madonna of the Goldfinch, Paolo Uccello’s Battle of San Romano, and Caravaggio’s Medusa and Bacchus. You’ll also see a number of famous works by German, Flemish and Dutch painters. If you look up, you’ll marvel at the ceilings, which were painted by the great Italian painters of the 16th century, such as Alessandro Allori and Antonio Tempesta. In addition to these beautiful masterpieces, the museum offers a breathtaking view of the Arno River and the church of Santa Felicità, whose interior you can even glimpse.
