The story of the Ponte Vecchio

Discover the Ponte Vecchio, Florence‘s most famous bridge, which crosses the Arno River. On sunny days or at night, the three arches that support it are reflected in the water, and you can’t help but take a photo to immortalize the beauty of the scene. One of Florence’s oldest bridges, it has become the city’s emblem for many international visitors.

CROSS THE PONTE VECCHIO

Its very first construction dates back to the Roman Empire, when its purpose was to connect one bank of the Arno to the Via Cassia, which in turn linked Rome to Florence. In those days, the bridge was made of wood, so it’s hardly surprising that it was destroyed in 1333 when the Arno flooded. It was rebuilt in stone to ensure its solidity. Its reconstruction in 1345 was designed by the Italian artist Taddeo Gaddi, or the architect Neri di Fioravante, depending on the version of the story. From then on, many butchers, tanners and fishmongers settled here. However, when the Medici family passed through Vasari’s corridor between their Palazzo Pitti on one side of the river and the Palazzo Vecchio on the other, they were bothered by the smells emanating from the stores. Consequently, in 1593, Ferdinand I allowed only goldsmiths’ and jewelers’ stores to be present on the bridge. Even today, only goldsmiths’ and jewellers’ stores can be found on the bridge. Interestingly, the Ponte Vecchio is the only bridge in Florence not to have been destroyed during the Second World War. Today, the bridge has become one of the city’s main tourist attractions, thanks not only to its distinctive architecture but also to its many stores. The Ponte Vecchio can only be crossed on foot. You’ll be amazed by the colorful little houses suspended over the water. These are the back stores of the merchants on the bridge. In the middle of the bridge, on either side, there is an opening offering a magnificent view of the Arno.
