The Greek Theatre of Syracuse is located on Temenite Hill, in the Neapolis archaeological park. Carved right into the rock, it’s one of the largest in the Greek world! Just outside the modern city of Syracuse, it’s a must-see during your stay in this part of Sicily.

Syracuse’s Greek Theatre ruins

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, the beautiful city of Syracuse will win you over with its many archaeological and historical sites: its amphitheatres, monuments, temples and churches. It opens a window on the history of ancient Greece. Its immense Greek theater remains one of the largest theaters ever built by the Greeks since antiquity. That’s why it remains one of Syracuse’s most visited sites to this day. The original theater had some sixty rows to accommodate the audience. These are no longer visible in their entirety due to the many transformations and renovations the theater has undergone. The theater was built in the 5th century B.C., rebuilt in the 3rd century B.C. and modified again in Roman times. Excavations of the site began in the late 18th century, but it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that the archaeological digs were completed, uncovering the theater in its earliest state. Today, the site hosts performances all year round. You can see classical plays and musical performances if you drop by during the annual Greek Theatre Festival. It’s a real experience to sit on the bleachers of this ancient theater. Imagine that, thousands of years before you, other people sat on the same bleachers as you to watch various performances and popular gatherings.
