The iconic towers of Lucca

Home » Blog » Culture

Located around 20 km from the Ligurian coast, close to Pisa and Florence, Lucca was built in 180 BC. It has lived through the ages and seen its heritage enriched over the centuries. Its rich history has left many traces in Italy, so much so that today it still boasts fortifications, ancient churches, palaces, towers, traditional houses and medieval alleyways. If you’re a lover of culture and historical monuments, a visit to Lucca is sure to be a great experience. Not to be missed are Lucca‘s famous towers.

GUINIGI TOWER OF TORRE GUINIGI

Erected by the Guinigi family, whose name it bears, in the 14th century during the Renaissance, Torre Guinigi is without doubt the finest tower in Lucca. Considered the masters of the city at the time, they decided to build it to enhance their property, which they considered too austere. It was also a way for them to assert their dominance over the city. The tower is located within the city walls. What makes it special? The famous tower stands some 40 m high, with Gothic-style windows and a terrace adorned with holm oaks at the top. Like a hanging garden, it offers a 360° panorama of the whole of Lucca, a must-see during your visit. From the top, you can take photos of Lucca’s fortifications, pretty parks and gardens, churches and emblematic monuments.

LA TORRE DELLE ORE OR THE CLOCK TOWER

In addition to its monuments, squares and festivals, the Clock Tower is also one of Lucca’s most famous landmarks. As its name suggests, the tower is distinguished by its imposing mechanical clock, which has served as a public clock since the 14th century, more precisely since 1471. At 50 m, it is also the tallest tower in the world. To reach the top, you’ll have to climb the 207 steps, but the view is well worth the effort. At the very top, you’ll enjoy a close-up view of the dial clock mechanism, one of the last remaining in Europe, and a breathtaking panorama of Lucca’s rooftops. Numerous other bell towers and towers can also be seen in the medieval city from this vantage point. The Torre Guinigi and the Torre delle Ore are the most impressive, however, and are well worth a visit.
