In Leonardo Da Vinci’s footsteps

Home » Blog » Culture

In Florence, cradle of the Italian Renaissance, museums, palaces, churches and historic squares are present at every turn. This part of Italy is a veritable jewel, showcasing medieval architecture and demonstrating the importance of the Renaissance period to the art world. Florence is associated with many renowned artists, but the most famous is the great Leonardo da Vinci. Painter, sculptor, scientist, inventor, anatomist, architect, botanist, musician, poet, philosopher and writer: the qualifications of the illustrious Leonardo da Vinci are endless. The work accomplished by this man of many talents is eloquent and disparate, and even today, many centuries later, his work is still cited as an example. An infinite number of works by countless artists who succeeded him testify to his unrivalled spirit.

LEONARDO DA VINCI IN FLORENCE

It was in the small hamlet of Anchiano, not far from Florence, that Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452, from the illegitimate union of a notary father and a peasant daughter. The house in which he was born, which in spite of itself has become a house museum, is open to the general public today and is a key attraction for enthusiasts and researchers alike. The talented painter arrived in Florence in 1467. He began his training in the polytechnic studio of the famous artist Andrea del Verrocchio. The two artists worked together for several years, during which time they created the Baptism of Christ, now housed in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery. Later, he opened his own studio and created the famous painting The Adoration of the Magi, which he never completed due to his thirst for new challenges, leading him to leave Florence for Milan in 1482. He entered the service of the Duke of Milan, then set off to conquer Europe, Rome and France. Leonardo da Vinci remains an emblematic figure of Italian art and of the city of Florence. If you visit the Tuscan capital, you can discover several of the artist’s major works, including The Annunciation, Leda and the Swan and The Incarnation, on display at the Uffizi Gallery. You can also discover the works of this genius in the museum dedicated to him: the Leonardo da Vinci Museum, in the heart of Florence. During your visit, you’ll discover pieces dating back to the Renaissance, ranging from notes and paintings to reproductions of inventions. To learn all about the fascinating life of Leonardo da Vinci, there’s nothing better than a visit to beautiful Florence.
