Kea, the still-secret island of the Cyclades

Looking for a dream destination without leaving Europe for your next vacation? Why not come to Greece, to the island of Kea? Also known as Tzia, this small island in the Cyclades is just an hour’s ferry ride from the port of Lavrio, a small town in southeast Athens, just an hour from the center. Less popular than the other Cycladic islands, it’s the perfect destination to relax and unwind, far from the crowds.

A little piece of history

The island of Kea lies near Cape Sounion, southeast of Athens, in the Cyclades. With a surface area of around 130 km2, an 88-km coastline boasting magnificent beaches, a rich flora and an important historical and cultural heritage, it has to be said that this Greek island is one of the most beautiful in the region. The island made headlines in 1916, when the liner Britannic, a hospital ship belonging to the British army during the First World War, ran aground off its coast on November 21 of that year. Its wreckage, still visible today, is part of the island’s history. Reaching depths of over 100 meters, this is one of the largest wrecks to be found in the Mediterranean.

The protected island of Kea

Because the island of Kea is not connected to the large port of Piraeus in Athens, it is still untouched by mass tourism. Rather regarded as a favorite spot for Athenians, mainlanders like to visit in their spare time and enjoy the mildness of its beaches at weekends. In fact, the area is home to a large number of second homes belonging to the wealthy Greek population. Its charm lies in its natural beauty, unspoilt beaches, peaceful environment and ancient heritage, not to mention its rich culture and gastronomy. Whether you’re with family, friends, lovers or on your own, you’ll find plenty to discover here.

What to see and to do in Kea

This little corner of paradise is particularly well-suited to outdoor activities. When you’ve finished relaxing on the pretty beaches or enjoying the sea, you can visit its traditional villages, ancient sites, windmills, watermills and towers. Take a hike through the mountains or tour the island by yacht, boat or ferry. But above all, don’t forget to take in the magnificent sunsets. A trip to Kea also allows you to recharge your batteries and relax in the gentle Greek way of life. You’ll also be able to savor local dishes and wines: try a pastry called “chausson de Tzia”, or Paspala, a pork dish, and indulge in honey sweets. Here are a few tavern addresses where you can sample these specialties: Ioulis, Koundouros, Korissia and Vourkari.

Where to stay in Kea ?

For your stay in Kea, choose a villa in the Melissaki area on the west side of the island. Outside, breathtaking sea views await you. Designed for spending time outdoors, the property also features an infinity pool, garden, cinema area, pool bar and shaded dining area, as well as direct access to the sea. Want to enjoy Koundouros beach? This beautiful villa, 20 km from the port and 500 m on foot from the beach, awaits you. Relaxation and peace will be the order of the day when you stay in this house. What’s more, it’s close to cafés, restaurants and a small shopping center. Bring all your family and friends to Kea! In the north-west of the island, you can rent these two villas spaced 200 m apart on the same property. Just 150 m from the sea and beach, they’re also close to the Vourkari marina, harbor, cafés and restaurant-bars.
