Welcome to the Marche...
The Marche is a region of history, culture and nature. Almost the two third of the region are made of hills on top of which are ancient villages protected by solid walls, a landscape of vineyards and fruit trees between the Apennines on side and 180km of coastline on the other side. The national park of the Sibillini Mounts is one of the numerous protected areas of the region, and is a real masterpiece of nature. The national park of Gran Sasso has beautiful waterfalls and majestic forests. There are many museums, pinacotecas and libraries, which show the cultural treasures of the Marche. The city of Urbino has, in the Ducal Palace, works of Raffaello, Piero della Francesca and Tiziano, and in the city of Ancona one will admire the San Ciriaco cathedral, one of the most beautiful monuments of central Italy dating back from the Roman age. A few kilometres south of Ancona, Loreto has the biggest sanctuary of Italy dedicated to the Virgin Marie, and Recanati, is a place of worship of the poet Giacomo Leopardi.
